Grateful for Christmas

Business Option is a rotating column of members of the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines appearing every Tuesday & Thursday in Manila Bulletin, business section.

Aside from the religious significance of Christmas, there are many things I have to be grateful for during Christmas time. First of all is of course being able to celebrate another one. Younger people may take living for granted but as you cross over middle age, mor-tality becomes a reality. I therefore cherish the various get-togethers that are most common this time of the year such as family celebrations, office parties, reunions of all kinds, get together with friends, you get what I mean.

I now truly enjoy just seeing people I know and care about, some of whom I only get to see once a year or even less frequently. It is so interesting to catch up with the latest events in their lives as well as sharing your own adventures, challenges and victories. Sometimes I get a pleasant surprise running into family and friends that have faded into my shadowy memories to be resurrected in full detail as if it was only yesterday that we last saw each other.

The cooler weather and the festive atmosphere adds to the Christmas cheer, never mind the traffic. As someone who loves to play golf, many of the clubs I am a member of have some kind of golf tournament and dinner events. This also adds to the pleasure of playing golf with family and friends, specially when there are raffle prizes involved and you win something!

Gift giving… and receiving is also part of being grateful for Christmas. I remember as I child, this would be the most magical time of the year because of the great Christmas gifts that I got. The gifts I got for my birthday pales in comparison. However, I noticed that as got older, the excitement in receiving gifts somehow became less. I now find it more important to be on the giving side, feeling that it is now my turn to pass on the wonder and anticipation to my family and friends who deserve it.

This Christmas in particular is a great one for me. For those of who who have won in a life and death situation, the relief of being able to prevail after a long struggle is indeed a joyous and liberating one. Having experienced being thrown under the bus, it has indeed been an educational experience for me and trust me when I say that something good comes from events like these. You get to know who your real friends are and who are just there during the good times. I also made a promise to myself that I will never do business with this institution again. I think the public deserves to know what this institution did to me but perhaps I will disclose it at another time.

Many people go through different sorts of crisis but sometimes they all work for the best. Speaking from experience, sometimes not getting what you want is a blessing in disguise. A series of events, which at that time seemed bad, led me to other paths that opened up new friendships and business opportunities that yielded returns that would not have been possible, even under the best case scenario of my previous direction.

Be grateful for your family, your friends, your job, your health and what you have. Sometimes it might seem that things are not going so well, I ask that you keep the faith, do your best, do what is right and never lose hope. Remember the old saying, “habang may buhay, may pag-asa”! Maligayang Pasko sa inyong lahat! (Comments may be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

People often ask me – “What’s going to be the price of bitcoin at the end on 2018”. Without any statistical basis, my unremitting retort is – “I don’t know”.

Golden FINEX rising

1968 was the year that changed the world, according to Time magazine. Civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. and US presidential candidate Robert Kennedy were assassinated. A youth rebellion paralyzed France and students took over Columbia University in New York. Czechoslovakia tasted freedom for a brief moment in the Prague Spring; Mexico City hosted the Olympics; and the Tet Offensive became the turning point of the Vietnam War.

What to expect in 2018

My crystal ball tells me that the letter T will loom large in 2018, actually 4 of them, Taxes, Trans portation, Telecommunications, and Tourism. With the recent signing into law of the first phase of the tax reform package, we can see a mixed bag of results that will benefit certain sectors and be disadvantageous to others. Low income earners with an annual income of not more than R250,000 will no longer have to pay any taxes. That is certainly good news for them,

Ethics in media

The use that people make of the media of social communications can bring about great good or great evil. Today we move in an “information age” wherein all sorts of images, messages, perceptions, and ideas assault our senses every day. Not only is media able to influence society, but they can actually propose ideas and models of behavior that impinge on the whole world.

A Christmas Message

Christmas is one day in a year where most Filipinos take the time and effort to prepare. To some, the preparation commences once the “ber” months start. And of course, there is the usual last minute rush to gear up for it.
